How to Find Your Virtual Assistant Niche (and Raise Your Rates!)
If you’ve been wondering how to stand out in a crowded VA market, the answer might be simpler than you think: find your virtual assistant niche.
Niching down has the power to transform your business, your client list, and even your income. (I went from charging $25/hour to $70/hour just by narrowing my focus – yes, really!)
In this post, I’ll break down exactly what a virtual assistant niche is, why it matters, and the three main ways to choose one.
You’ll also learn the pros and cons of niching, plus a simple next step to help you discover your own sweet spot.
Let’s get to it!
What Does a Virtual Assistant Niche Actually Mean?
You’ve probably heard the saying, “the riches are in the niches.” But what does that mean for your VA business?
In short: the more specific you are about what you do and who you do it for, the easier it is to attract dream clients – and charge higher rates.
When you specialize, you’re not just offering tasks; you’re offering solutions that feel tailor-made for your clients.
And that kind of focus? It’s valuable.
Let me share my secret sauce for finding your virtual assistant niche!
Three Ways to Niche Down as a Virtual Assistant
When you’re ready to carve out your Virtual Assistant niche, there are three main routes you can take: by service, by industry, or by a combination of both.
Let’s break each one down.
1. Niche by Service
This means you choose what you do, no matter who your client is.
For example, I started out as a general VA offering a little bit of everything. Over time, I discovered I loved (and was actually really good at) copywriting.
So instead of being “just a VA,” I branded myself as a copywriter – and that shift alone helped me raise my rates significantly.
If there’s a task you genuinely enjoy – like social media management, email marketing, podcast editing, or project management – niching by service might be your best move.
2. Niche by Industry
Another option is to focus on who you serve.
Maybe you have a background in real estate and decide to become a Real Estate VA. Or perhaps you used to be a wedding photographer, and now you specialize in supporting wedding pros with admin, editing, and client communication.
Industry-specific knowledge makes you incredibly valuable because you “get it” – you know the challenges, lingo, and workflows of your clients’ world.
Pro tip: Only niche by industry if you already have connections in that space (or you’re genuinely excited to build them).
Picking an industry out of thin air can feel limiting if you don’t already know how to find clients in it.
3. Niche by Service and Industry
This is the most specific – and often the most lucrative – path.
It means you combine both approaches. For instance:
- Transaction coordination just for real estate agents
- Social media management just for health coaches
- Photo editing just for wedding photographers
This combo lets you become a true go-to expert in a very specific corner of the VA world.
The result?
Higher rates.
Easier marketing.
Solid client partnerships.
Should You Niche Down Right Away?
Here’s the truth: for 99% of new VAs, starting as a generalist is the best move.
Why?
Because working with different clients on different tasks helps you figure out what you actually like (and don’t like) doing.
Over time, you’ll naturally find yourself gravitating toward certain services or industries – and that’s when you know it’s time to niche.
And remember: niching doesn’t mean you have to fire your current clients.
You can ease into it by adding new services, experimenting with new marketing, and slowly transitioning as your business grows.
