Earn $5k/Mo Working from Home as a Virtual Assistant — Day in the Life with Meagan Hoffner
Ever wondered what it really looks like to be a virtual assistant?
Today, we’re spotlighting Meagan Hoffner, a former teacher turned VA, mom of twins, and business owner who built a flexible career from her family farm in Florida.
Meagan’s story is full of grit, pivots, and practical lessons that every aspiring VA can relate to.
Let’s dive in!

Tell us a little about yourself!
Hi, I’m Megan 👋 I’m 26, a proud Florida Gator alum, and married to my high school sweetheart. I started my career in elementary education and taught for two years before life threw me a big (and wonderful) curveball: I became a mom to boy/girl twins in 2023.
When my husband and I moved back to Florida, we settled on our family farm, where we raise and sell show cattle as livestock projects for the youth in 4H and FFA. And for fun? I’m a huge Disney fan, and I and I love having the opportunity to plan trips there with my family
How did you get started as a virtual assistant?
My journey looked a little different than most. After my twins were born, I planned to stay home with them (daycare costs are no joke). About a year later, a close family friend asked if I could help with some back-end work in her business.
I had heard of virtual assistants before, but didn’t know all the ins and outs. Once I got a taste of the work, I was hooked. Soon after, I set up my LLC, created a website and branding, and in July 2024, I enrolled in the SavvySystem virtual assistant course. That community and support gave me the confidence to really go all-in.
What services did you start with?
Like many new VAs, I started broad, general admin, graphic design, and a little social media. My teaching background taught me to be adaptable, and my tech-savvy side made learning tools and platforms easier.
Over time, I realized I didn’t enjoy certain services (like social media management). Instead, I leaned into what I loved: graphic design, website design, and digital marketing. That’s when my business started to thrive.
Pro tip: Pay attention to what gives you energy and what drains you. You don’t have to offer everything.
How did you know it was time to niche down?
At first, I took on almost any client work that came my way. But after several months, I noticed certain projects left me procrastinating and burned out. One client in particular made me realize I needed to pivot.
That experience taught me: if a service is draining your joy, it’s okay to walk away. I used templates from the SavvySystem virtual assistant course to gracefully let that client go, and I refined my offerings to only what lights me up.
Now, I focus on:
- Website design and optimization
- Email marketing
- Graphic and print design
- Meta ads (I recently got certified!)
How has becoming a VA impacted your family life?
At first, balancing work and twins was tough. I worked during naps, late nights, and any spare moment. But once I built systems and processes, everything shifted.
Now, I take a more balanced approach:
- Work early mornings before my kids wake up
- Only schedule client meetings during nap times
- Travel with my laptop, recently working poolside in Daytona while my husband attended a conference
The flexibility is priceless.
My kids are my biggest “why,” and I love being able to stay present in their lives while building a business I enjoy.
What personal growth have you experienced as a VA?
My biggest shift has been in confidence. At first, I battled imposter syndrome…
Will people actually pay me for this? Am I qualified enough?
But one year in, I know my value. I’m better at selling myself, setting boundaries, and running my business with confidence. I no longer question whether I can do this — I know I can.
What advice would you give someone thinking about becoming a VA?
Just do it. Don’t wait for the “perfect time” or until you think you know it all. Start with the skills you already have, even if that feels small.
The beauty of this industry is that you can grow, pivot, and learn as you go. You don’t need a degree or certification.
You just need the willingness to show up and keep going.
